The Road to Independence Starts at Home - and on the Road

July is a time to celebrate independence, and for older adults, independence often means something simple but incredibly meaningful: the ability to continue living safely in the home they love.

As we age, everyday tasks can become more challenging. Climbing stairs, preparing meals, getting in and out of the bathtub, or navigating the home safely may require new strategies or modifications. That's where the CAPABLE (Community Aging in Place—Advancing Better Living for Elders) program makes a difference.

A key member of the CAPABLE team is the occupational therapist (OT), who works alongside participants to identify what matters most to them and develop practical solutions that support their goals. Rather than focusing on limitations, occupational therapists help older adults build on their strengths. They may recommend adaptive equipment, suggest home modifications to reduce fall risks, teach new techniques for completing daily activities, and empower individuals to remain safe and independent in their own homes.

Our newest member of the Fitness to Drive team, Jodi Johnson, also provides OT services with two CAPABLE programs in Colorado Springs - Brothers Redevelopment and the Colorado Visiting Nurse Association. She works in partnership with a nurse and a handyman to conduct about 10 home visits over 4 to 6 months. The primary goal is to help seniors reduce the risk of falling, manage pain, and age in place by customizing the home environment.

But independence doesn't stop at the front door.

For many older adults, the ability to drive safely is what makes aging in place possible. Reliable transportation allows people to attend medical appointments, shop for groceries, visit friends and family, volunteer, and stay engaged in their communities. When driving becomes more difficult, housing decisions are often affected. If someone can no longer safely access the places they need to go, they may begin to question whether they can continue living independently.

Occupational therapists who specialize in driver rehabilitation understand this important connection between home and community mobility. Through comprehensive driver evaluations, education, and individualized recommendations, they help older adults determine the safest path forward—whether that means continuing to drive with confidence, driving with modifications, or planning for alternative transportation options.

Supporting safe mobility helps preserve not only independence, but also quality of life.

If you or someone you care about has concerns about driving, don't wait until a crisis occurs. A professional driver safety evaluation can provide peace of mind and help you make informed decisions about staying active, connected, and independent.
